  1. This is a family portrait, but it is that bit different.

  3. My youngest son had just become his schools youngest even chess
  4. champion and I wanted a shot other than the usual 3/4 head and
  5. shoulder with cups and medals.
  6.  
  7. We set up the chess set on the top of a stool and I arranged a
  8. flash brolly as main light at a low level so as not to cast
  9. strong downward shadows. Behind the lads head is a tiny flash gun
  10. with it's own built in slave unit. That triggers the gun when the
  11. main light fires.

  13. The camera was set up on a tripod in position and focused on the
  14. face. As I needed maximum depth of field I calculated an exposure
  15. to give the smallest possible aperture by setting the flash at
  16. full power.

  18. This is the result. It has been in several magazines, including
  19. on the cover - in black and white - of a child care magazine to
  20. illustrate an article on child genius ! That's not in character.
