This is a family portrait, but it is that bit different.
My youngest son had just become his schools youngest even chess
champion and I wanted a shot other than the usual 3/4 head and
shoulder with cups and medals.
We set up the chess set on the top of a stool and I arranged a
flash brolly as main light at a low level so as not to cast
strong downward shadows. Behind the lads head is a tiny flash gun
with it's own built in slave unit. That triggers the gun when the
main light fires.
The camera was set up on a tripod in position and focused on the
face. As I needed maximum depth of field I calculated an exposure
to give the smallest possible aperture by setting the flash at
full power.
This is the result. It has been in several magazines, including
on the cover - in black and white - of a child care magazine to
illustrate an article on child genius ! That's not in character.
